House With No Kitchen - Day 18

It's pasta night! We'll be enjoying penne with vodka sauce. Sometime soon I hope, because this hot plate is slow as molasses!

House With No Kitchen - Days 10 through 17

The last week has been a blur. The work on the house has slowed to where what is being done isn't really noticeable from day to day, and we have to wait for inspections and certain things to be completed before we can move forward.

Which of course means lots of eating out, frozen meals, and the generosity of friends & neighbors for dinner.

I feel like I'm barely keeping up. The dust has only settled slightly, and the pollen has crept in to add to the layers of fine dust on everything. Somehow we're making more laundry than ever. And the hot/cold weather fluctuations are making it difficult to keep the temperature regulated.

I have to say, though, that I'm pleasantly surprised. It's not as bad as I thought it would be. The whole kitchen-being-gutted thing could definitely be worse.

I'd have to say that the most unpleasant part is washing dishes by hand. I really hate washing dishes. I'm one of those put-it-in-the-dishwasher-without-rinsing-it types, so actually WASHING them is a real chore.

Here is my sink, which will likely be gone by this time next week. Sending us all to my master bathroom for so much as a drink of water. I believe that might be when the real insanity kicks in.

We'll see how long it takes for me to go really crazy.
Wish me luck!

House With No Kitchen - Day 9

We rocked day 9 with a trip to Char-Grill. Even better, we used a groupon! I'll now spend the rest of the week trying to work off the chocolate milkshake. Mmmmmmm.

House With No Kitchen - Day 8

Skipping over day 7 (we went out, shocker) and here we are at Day 8.

Witness the magic of the hot plate! I'm cooking a pasta meal from Trader Joes. Hope it's good!

House With No Kitchen - Day 6

Tonight we enjoyed a delightful meal and entertainment at St. Marks Dinner and a Show, put on by the ASP team at church. Great food and even better talent!
Totally enjoyable!

House With No Kitchen - Day 5

Hey look! I'm cooking!

House With No Kitchen - Day 4

Yep, we went out to eat again. We were going to try and eat at home, but that didn't work out because the girls had their first lacrosse game. We wound up at Tyler's, eating junk food and drinking beer (not the girls, they drank water.)

House With No Kitchen - Day 3

So tonight we went out to Piccola. Our favorite pizza & Italian joint. I don't know how much it cost (Pete picked up the tab, good man) but I'm sure it wasn't cheap. At this rate, we'll be out of money in no time!

I promise, some day soon, I'll get my act together and start cooking. Real soon.

House With No Kitchen - Day 2

Project: feed a family of four for six weeks without a kitchen.

Tonight's dinner: free-for-all of leftovers and snacks, followed by a trip to The Skinny Dip.

Actually, I have a make-shift kitchen. Since we're remodeling, we've moved the refrigerator into the living room along with a microwave. And I bought a hot plate, but have yet to take it out of the box.

The whole room is a disaster because we have to do everything in here. There are papers and cereal boxes piled up, paint swatches, dirty dishes, mail, homework and a first aid kit. The couch is covered with coats we needed just the other day, computer bags and a random bag full of stuff from when Maryssa cleaned out the car (such a good girl!) Add to that a light dusting of dog hair and a layer of construction dust, and you've got the perfect recipe for driving me MAD.

Stay tuned, this should be good.

House With No Kitchen

For the next little while, I'll be writing about our renovation antics. Specifically, how someone like me (food lover, avid home cook, hater of fast food) can survive without a kitchen.

Our home is under renovation, and I officially lost my favorite appliance this past weekend - a fabulous gas stove and oven. This photo shows where my stove used to be.

Today is day 2 of the adventure. For day 1, we went out to Chipotle. It was delicious and cost in the range of $17 for me and the girls. Thank goodness they're still young enough to eat from the kids menu at most places. Otherwise we'd be broke for sure! Pete was out of town, so he probably ate something terribly unhealthy, or nothing at all.

Anyway, hopefully I can come up with some fun and interesting ways to feed us all that are easy, yummy, and budget friendly. I guess we'll see!

A First for The Toes

I took the girls for their first real pedicures today. Really fun! Alex loved the massage chair, Maryssa just sat back to take it all in. They even both got some fancy bling!

QOD - 3/5/12

You know how sometimes you ask questions of the kids, just so that you don't sound like you're barking orders all the time? They're questions like "Did you brush your teeth?" and "Did you finish your homework?" The instruction is implied in the question, but it comes across much nicer. And usually the kids get it.
Last night, I was getting ready to tuck Alex in and noticed she was still wearing her bathrobe. So I asked, "Do you have your jammies on?" intending to imply that before I could tuck her in, she needed to change into her pajamas.
Her response: "A robe counts as a jammie, doesn't it?"

NOT the same

This weekend, Alex got a haircut. Not just a trim, but a real, honest to goodness haircut. And its pretty short, so she looks VERY different from her sister. She donated 10" of her hair to Locks of Love. Everyone is giving her lots of attention over this, and I'm not quite sure how she feels about it.

She did tell me that she doesn't really like the cut - that she thinks its too short. But I assured her that it would grow out quickly and she'll be happy with it in no time.

In the mean time, Maryssa did not get a haircut. She had a trim a few weeks ago, but her hair is still really long. I think she was more outwardly nervous about Alex's short hair than anyone was. She tends to worry about her sister, and I could tell she was concerned about her making such a big change.

Its very interesting to watch the girls grow up into young ladies and how they handle things. Remember middle school? Something like a haircut could really make or break your year.

I'm proud of Alex for doing what she did and cutting her hair. I think she'll learn a lot from the experience - even if its that she doesn't want to do it again!
